Air Cleaners for COPD
Multi-Center CLEAN AIR Randomized Controlled Trial in COPD
Clean Air is a multi-center, randomized trial that aims to enroll 770 former smokers with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) throughout the United States. This research is being conducted to help understand if air cleaners can be an effective tool to improve COPD symptoms and decrease rescue medication use by purifying indoor air. This study is funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
Study participation lasts one year. Participants will receive two air cleaners to run constantly in the home for one year. Some air cleaners will have HEPA filters, and some will not. At the end of the study, everyone will receive working air cleaners with filters. Monitors will capture the indoor air quality and rescue medication use.
There is a single in-person baseline clinic visit and five or more remote follow-up calls. Study activities include:
NO2 Training
Air Nicotine Training
Purple Air Training
